Governor Marcus Morton
1784-1864
Born in Freetown, Massachusetts on December 19, 1784.
Marcus Morton was the twelfth [February 6, 1825 - May 26, 1825], seventeenth [January 18, 1940 - January 7, 1841] and nineteenth [January 17, 1843 - January 3, 1844] governor to serve Massachusetts.
He also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1817 to 1821 and then served as a justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1825 to 1840.
Governor Marcus Morton passed away on February 6, 1864, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.
His home was posthumously gifted to the City of Taunton to become the city’s first hospital. The Taunton Hospital Company was incorporated June 8, 1888. In 1914, the name of the corporation was changed to Morton Hospital.
